As part of Pilton Festival, Lord Basil's Reformers presented a brilliant comedy with the surprising title of "The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild Dramatic Society's Production of Macbeth".
The play, by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jnr, centres on the intrepid ladies of the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild Dramatic Society who, with their producer David and stage manager Henry, are trying to stage a production of the classic tragedy Macbeth. "We call it 'The Farndale Macbeth'," said director Pip Cartmell. "It saves a lot of time!"
Macbeth is played by Thelma who thinks she is the star and better than all the others. When Lady Macbeth fails to turn up, stage manager Henry is press-ganged into taking the part. He turns out to be confident and erudite in the part which is a surprise to all and annoys Thelma no end. As they near the end of the play the adjudicator reminds them they have only nine minutes left so they try to finish it in double quick time with the producer stepping in to speed things up. Brilliant!
